Development orientation of Vietnam's seaweed industry

Image
The seaweed industry is receiving special attention from the Government, with the development orientation to become a large-scale, industrial, synchronous, efficient and sustainable commodity production industry. Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien gave speech at the conference On December 2, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) coordinated with the People's Committee of Phu Yen province to organize a conference on tasks and solutions to develop Vietnam's seaweed industry. According to the Directorate of Fisheries, seaweed is a group of low-level plants with enormous economic value. Besides being used as food, seaweed is also used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, bio-fertilizers, bio-stimulants, bio-packaging, bio-fuels, etc. Seaweed farming is currently receiving attention from many countries around the world as a nature-based solution for sustainable economic development. Vietnam has 88 species of seaweed with economic value, with about 900,000 hectares...

Vietnam targets harvesting 500,000 tons of seaweed by 2030

Potential area for seaweed cultivation stands at some 900,000 hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has set a target of harvesting 500,000 tons of seaweed by 2030 as part of the national seafood development strategy. To boost growth in the seaweed industry, MARD has proposed that the Prime Minister list seaweed as a primary product in the seafood field because of its high nutritional value. The total seaweed farming area in 2023 stood at 16,500 ha, with total output of 150,000 tons, according to General Director of the Directorate of Fisheries Tran Dinh Luan. Profits posted from seaweed farming are estimated at VND150-200 million ($6,200-8,300) per ha.  The potential area for seaweed cultivation in Vietnam is 900,000 ha, according to MARD.  The industry will focus on seaweed farming along the coast of provinces from north-central Thanh Hoa to south-central Binh Thuan, including grape seaweed and cartilage seaweed. https://en.vneconomy.vn/vie...

16S rRNA Sequence

16S rRNA Sequence Carl Woese and George E Fox was the first to used the 16S rRNA gene in bacterial phylogenetic analysis in 1977. This method revolutionized the field of microbiology in identification of unknown microorganisms.  16S ribosome RNA is a subunit of a 30S ribosome RNA, It plays a remarkable role in bacterial translation. It plays a major role in the translation part. This ribosome acts with the 23S subunit and helps in the binding of 50S and 30S ribosomes. Which in turn initiates the protein synthesis. The 16S rRNA has a unique kind of sequence known as the anti shine-dalgarno sequence which binds to the AUG of the mRNA to initiate protein synthesis. The 16S rRNA gene has two parts one is a nonvariable domains and is common in all bacteria. But the other domain is a highly variable region and this is why this part is used in the classification of bacterial species. At present there are many primers available for performing PCR study in 16S rRNA sequencing a...

MICROBIOLOGY

Image
Microbiology is the study of living organisms of microscopic size. Which include bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and infectious agents at the borderline of life that are called viruses. Microorganisms are closely associated with the health and welfare of human beings, some microorganisms are beneficial and others are detrimental. For example, microorganisms are involved in the making of yogurt, cheese and wine. Microorganism can cause disease, spoil food and deteriorate materials like iron pipes, glass lenses and wood pilings. Antony Van  Leeuwenhoek’s report on the ubiquity of microbes enabled Louis Pasteur to discover the involvement of these creatures in fermentation reaction and allowed Robert Koch, Theobald smith,  and many others to discover the association of microbes with disease. Koch is remembered for his isolation of the bacteria that cause anthrax and tuberculosis and for the rigid criteria he demanded before a s...
