Development orientation of Vietnam's seaweed industry
The seaweed industry is receiving special attention from the Government, with the development orientation to become a large-scale, industrial, synchronous, efficient and sustainable commodity production industry.
On December 2, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) coordinated with the People's Committee of Phu Yen province to organize a conference on tasks and solutions to develop Vietnam's seaweed industry.
According to the Directorate of Fisheries, seaweed is a group of low-level plants with enormous economic value. Besides being used as food, seaweed is also used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, bio-fertilizers, bio-stimulants, bio-packaging, bio-fuels, etc.
Seaweed farming is currently receiving attention from many countries around the world as a nature-based solution for sustainable economic development.
Vietnam has 88 species of seaweed with economic value, with about 900,000 hectares of potential seaweed cultivation area. However, the cultivation of seaweed in our country is still in its infancy. The area under seaweed cultivation in the period 2005-2019 only increased from 8,265 ha to 10,150 ha. The harvest in 2019 is only about 120,000 tons of fresh seaweed.
It’s said that some localities have also successfully built integrated aquaculture models. Such as the cultivation of cartilage seaweed in combination with raising snails, sea cucumbers and green mussels like in Khanh Hoa. Cultivation of snails, cultivators combined with growing seaweed in the waters of Phu Yen. Aquaculture intercropping in ponds with natural seaweed sources in Hai Phong…
These models have created a wide range of products, diversified sources of supply, and met the needs of many different markets, reducing risks in production and distribution, and using water efficiently.
In Vietnam, a number of large enterprises have been involved in seaweed production and processing. That is, Hainan Okinawa Co., Ltd (in Binh Thuan) specializes in producing fresh grape seaweed and salted grape seaweed for sale to Japan, with a capacity of 130 - 150 tons/year. Super Truong Phat Plastic Company (in Quang Ninh) produces seeds and grows Eucheuma cotonii on floats using HDPE material; production is about 2000 tons/year…
However, in distribution systems in Vietnam, seaweed products dominate are still imported from Korea, Japan, China, Thailand...
At the conference, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized the application of science and technology in the development strategy of Vietnam's seaweed industry. Building a scientific research institution in connection with businesses, labor resources and market efficiency. This is one of the basic solutions to comprehensively accelerate the seaweed industry in our country.
MARD is also coordinating with the Ministry of Science and Technology to carry out the tasks of preserving genetic resources and researching and creating seaweed varieties for scientific and technological development of varieties in the 2021-2025 period under the Research and Product Development Program. Seed production for agricultural restructuring in the period of 2021-2030.
Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien affirmed that the seaweed industry is receiving special attention from the Government, orienting to develop into a large-scale, industrial, synchronous, efficient and sustainable commodity production industry. Create branded seaweed products, meet the needs of domestic and export markets. Thereby, creating jobs, improving socio-economic conditions, and raising incomes for coastal communities./.
